Shelter for Girls in Kenya

This is from a friend of mine who spends a lot of her time trying to make the world better. She asked me to post this today. Today is a great day to help her because its 'bonus' day and your gift will be matched.

We are currently taking part in a fund raising competition with a project called "Tareto Maa". http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/protect-70-girls-from-genital-mutilation-in-kenya/ Tareto Maa runs a shelter in Kenya for girls at risk of Female Genital Mutilation and early enforced marriage. The challenge runs from now until December 31, 2011 (2359 hrs EST).

One way to help us win some extra funds for the project is to just share the project page on facebook by hitting its "share" button on Global Giving (right below "donate" on the right side of the page). The 5 projects who have raised at the end at least $2,000 from at least 25 different people and have shared their project page through this way the most on facebook will win an extra bonus of $300.

In addition, the project with the greatest number of unique donors at the end will be awarded a bonus of $2,000. Currently we are this project, hooray :) - and if we keep it like this, that would be just fantastic! Because an extra bonus of $2,000 would mean that we could build another urgently needed dormitory for the girls.

Adopt a Gorilla

A few years back I adopted Gorillas for my family for Holiday presents. I adopted them through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.

This is a great organization that really helps Gorillas.

Loans to Julia's.

I made a kiva loan to Juana Julia, who is a member of the Communal Bank “La Positiva” (The Positive) which is in the District of Calleria, Department of Ucayali in Peru. She is 65 years old and has four children.

I also made a loan to Julia in Nicaragua. Julia Xiomara is 31 years old, she works selling general merchandise. She began with her own funds, and with the advice of her co-workers started getting loans through employees of certain institutions. In this way she began to get her own clients. She accepts payment every other week, which is much more favorable for her customers. The funding that she is currently seeking is to buy nail polish, lipstick, vanity items and underwear.

I loan to Julia's because I like the name. I find everyone on Kiva to be worthy, and I have to sort some way. So I look for Julia's. Or people in Honduras because I am trying to help Honduras too. But I also lend to every country and sometimes even just randomly select.

New Kiva loans

Back from vacation, lending to Julia's.
Julia is 54 years old and has no children under her care. She lives in her own home and works with her daughter. Her house is located in the District of Cata-cos in the Department of Piura, in northern Peru. Julia has a store in her home where she offers her customers and neighbors different products of basic necessity. She also sells beer.

Julia del Socorro is a hard-working and entrepreneurial woman who owns a grocery store. She started her business selling snacks, iced treats, ice, etc. then she gradually started buying bread, eggs, matches and salt in small quantities. She lives in Nicaragua.

Medecins sans frontieres/Doctors without Borders

I made a donation today to Medecins sans frontieres (Doctors without Borders). They do such a fantastic job. I always donate to them when I make donations for disasters, because they usually already have people in the area and can start helping quick.

Tree People

People need trees. Trees sometimes need people.
I made a donation to Treepeople today, a local group that plants trees in the forest (and around town). I've helped them plant too.

Monday, May 23, 2011

I made a donation today to the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. They do a great job. I am also going to drop by some of my fleece blankets for the 100+ cats they are taking care of from a hoader. They can't find them homes just yet (legal reasons I think).

Kiva loan and trees

Renewed my membership in the local arboretum. Its good to support trees. I like tree people too.
Also made a Kiva loan to Ana Julia AragĂ³n de Castillo.
Ana Julia AragĂ³n de Castillo, 57 years old, lives with her life partner and their children in the department of Santa Ana. She has a store in her home that is much-frequented by the people in her neighborhood because they always find what they need for any occasion. Every day her clientele increases and she doesn't want to disappoint them. She decided to ask INTEGRAL for a loan that will give her the opportunity to buy more products for her store like drinks, snacks, instant soups and basic grains, among other things. Ana is a woman who meets her goals, and she always tells herself "what I propose to myself, with the help of God, I accomplish". She has placed total confidence in the fact that through this loan she will achieve another goal, that of giving her family the full life that they deserve.
