kiva loan and gift certificates

I made a loan to the 16 de Julio group in Boliva. Also gave a few gift certificates to get others interested in Kiva, I thought I would start a kiva college fund for my friend's baby who was just born. I'm going to drop off 2 gift certificates, for her birthday and Christmas. It would be a great way for her to save for college, her friends and family would be more inclined to donate, and even if she doesn't get the best return, it will end up doing the most good for the planet. Win/win.

Not wasting food.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to embark upon a personal quest to not waste any food. I was reading statistics about how 40% of our food gets wasted in this country, and realizing that I was also purchasing more than I needed and wasting a lot.

So I started eating up all of the food that I have. That has lead me to try new things. I am currently enjoying Cilantro pesto, I had bought 4 bunches for 99 cents (at the 99 cent only store) and only used a few leaves on tacos. So I turned it into pesto by adding oil, garlic, lime and green onion.

Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA

I made a donation today to the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. I am a big animal lover (especially cats) and really appreciate the work the society does. I am glad there is a place I can call when I see an animal in trouble, and people who care help.

A micro loan to Costa Rica

I am still out of the country, but made a quick Kiva.org loan online to Julián Apolinar González González in Alajuela, Costa Rica. Don Julian is a farmer and is requesting a loan of 670,000 colones to increase his crop yield and prepare his land for planting. He will purchase seeds, fertilizers, and other supplies necessary to ensure optimum conditions for growing cassava. Cassava a tuber that is rich in nutrients and has a pleasant flavor and is popular in Costa Rica. I wonder if its available in the USA?
670,000 colones is about $1200 US. So far he has 6 Kiva lenders helping him (including myself); 4 from the USA, 1 from France, and 1 from the Czech Republic. I'm sure more people from around the world will be joining us in this loan to help this farmer from Costa Rica. Its wonderful to be part of such a caring global community.

busy, busy, busy

I am finding that now that I NEED the income from my hobby business (SO has been out of work for 6 months now), I am spending as much time as possible on it. Always something else to do. And I have a level of anxiety that I never had with a guaranteed paycheck, even though the business is doing fine and able to pay the bills. But something might change...

Anyhow, that's one of my excuses for not keeping up with this blog. Sorry. I have been doing things, I've been advertising for our local food drive this weekend, and trying to get friends to come help out and box food. I'm also working on trying to cure PTSD and epilepsy, but that research is slow moving. I'm still taking snacks and mags to the vets regularly, and was told I have kept many vets out of jail this year ('cause they didn't have to go steal food).

I made 2 kiva loans today, to Julia's. One was to María Julia Asencio Escamilla
El Salvador and the other was to Julia Beatriz Castellanos Ochoa in Honduras.

Today I will be meeting with some people from Honduras to discuss our newly funded epilepsy project.

Helping a sewing business

I made a loan today to someone a bit like me.

Badarbirvaa Batdulams is 44 years old. She lives with her parents and her seventeen year old son in the Uvurhangai Province of Central Mongolia. The family lives together in a "ger," a yurt or traditional Mongolian nomadic tent.

Batdulam supports the family by operating a sewing business. She wants to eventually turn her small business into a factory with several employees. Batdulam purchases materials for her business 1-2 times per month, depending on her customer’s wants and needs. She is requesting a 3,500,000 tugrug (approx. $2475 USD) loan to purchase a large amount of wholesale materials in order to attract new customers to her business.
