Transportation in Nicaragua

I made a loan today through Kiva.org to Fransisico Javier Mendoza Balmceda for his transportation business. The loan is long - 22 months and for a large amount ($1200). I am guessing this loan will take longer to fund. But Kiva only has 38 loans right now, and only had 2 yesterday.

The Kiva statistics are a bit astounding to me, because I remember when Kiva loaned its first million, and now it lends 3/4 of a million each week. Lenders are counted by the second.

I hope Education Generation takes off that way and we start significantly changing the literacy rates in the world. I just contributed to the education of Anne Anyago in Kenya.

I have HOPE, despite all the obsticles.

Counting the Homeless

I helped count the homeless last night. It was apparently the largest homeless count in the nation, and people were counting all over the country. Los Angeles is being counted in 3 nights, and last night was my area. We were assigned a census tract and drove up each street, looking for homeless people, shelters, and lived in vehicles. It was quite interesting. I got a shirt and a hat.

Kiva

Not many loans on Kiva, but I had to make one since it's been a while and my new Kiva Calendar arrived while I was away. The calendar is put together by Kiva friends and this year they did a fantastic professional job and the pictures and write ups are esquisite. I guess that's what comes from a group project; lots of input and an incredible product. You can order your Kiva calendar here.

I made a loan to Nazaket Shakhverdiyeva who is in Bilasuvar, Azerbaijan and has a food market that sells many items, including cheese (my favorite food). She's going to invest in her market in hopes it eventually helps finance her daughters higher education.

Counting the Homeless

I signed up today to count the homeless at the end of the month.

The Homeless Count gives us the information we need to prevent and end homelessness in our communities. On January 27, 28 or 29th, you will help collect the data that we need to:

• Preserve $72 million in Federal funds for local homeless programs;
• Raise awareness in your community about the issue of homelessness; and
• Target housing and services to fit the needs of homeless people.

Kiva

I made a loan today to the ANGELICA BERNAL VIZCARRA Group. It was the oldest loan on Kiva.

The “El Sol” group, represented by Ms. Angelica Bernal, is comprised of residents of the same neighborhood, which means that they have all known each other for many years. The members own small stands and sell groceries, fast food, cosmetics and bread. Some members have their own cleaning service. As in all commercial spheres, the law of supply and demand always comes into play, but over the years, the members have acquired experience in retail, which means that they know that they will overcome any problem that may arise. The loan from Fundación Agrocapital will be used to purchase products and supplies to restock their stands and improve the quality of their products. Most of the members have experience with solidarity groups, but this is the first time they work in this mode with Fundación Agrocapital. They guarantee that they are honorable and responsible people, which is why they have been given the opportunity to improve both their quality of life and that of their families.

Helping a school girl.

I sponsored Dania Rauf in Chakwal, Pakistan today. I contributed $20 towards her $80 school fees. I love the way Education Generation works, I contribute an amount that I can afford, and, with help from other contributing, she gets to go to school. Her education will have a big effect in the community, not just for her, but for her family, the village, and ultimately, the country.

Dania Rauf wants to be a teacher. She knows Pakistan’s literacy rate is only 37%, and by teaching she can change the lives of her villagers and bring prosperity to them. In addition to her studies she helps her father at farm. Monthly income of her father is very low and he cannot bear her school expenses.

Note: This scholarship helps Dania ensure she can remain in school for the remainder of the school year, to August 31, 2009.

Back and diapers

I'm just back from a long trip to Canada. It was cold.

Our Obama service group has started a social website - Rose City ObamaWorks and I'm now one of the admins. Sure I'll do it. I'm hoping it will be a great resource for dealing with a lot of our local issues. Grassroots change begins at home.

I just ordered diapers for our diaper drive for our local shelter online. I went through igive so a percentage of the money will go to the Kiva Shopping club.
