New Region Founder for Novica - Guatemala

I became a New Region Founder for Novica today to help get an office going in Guatemala. I can't wait, I love the weaving and tend to wear a lot of Guatemalan clothes.

I like the idea of having people contribute to open offices. Helps a lot more people quicker.

I'm back from Hawaii, I was there for 10 days attending scientific conferences. Meeting with other people trying to make the world a better place by identifying genetic causes for human diseases in order to treat and prevent them. It was fun and productive.

Fabric scraps

My internet company generates a lot of fabric scraps. So I have been busy trying to get fabric scraps to people who will use it, preferably to make other's people's lives better. But I'm just happy to keep it out of the landfill. I mailed 7 boxes of unique scraps and samples to Colorado to an African Refuge Program that they want to start at the end of the month, they have sewing machines and refuges! I've also sent off a few boxes to people who have asked who make things for hospitals.

Facebook freinded a Gorilla

I befriended a gorilla on facebook today - Kamunga a female silverback. It only cost $1. I wanted to donate more but couldn't. I guess I need to friend more gorillas. I hope its a successful fund raiser.

I made a loan today to Honduras. Things are happening in that country - my colleague can't go home because the airport is closed.

SANTOS DAVID GARCIA JUAREZ: his main activity is selling various things. His business operates under the name "Variedades MELISSA" and is located on the main street of Villa Santa, a very strategic location for this type of business. He is married with 2 children, whom he provides with everything for food, clothing, medical and educational expenses. His wife is a nurse and lends her services to a health centre in a community near Villa Santa. In his business, he has a great variety of materials for students, gifts for every occasion, body creams and American clothes. The income the business generates covers home expenses.

MARIA ONDINA AMADOR RODRIGUEZ: she has worked selling sweets for 7 years. Previously she spent all her time selling from a room in her house but for the past 3 years she has been selling the sweets in a cafeteria in the Villa Santa college where she receives more income. She now sells from the college during working hours and when the school period finishes, she continues selling from a room in her house in the evening. Her clients prefer her for the attention she offers and the taste of her products. She is married with 4 children. She decided to work in the business because their financial situation was difficult and since starting their living conditions have improved. She works with her husband to cover certain household costs and has been able to support one daughter to graduate from secondary school. Her husband works in agriculture and their daughter helps with the business.

JOSE CECILIO SANCHEZ ZUNIGA: he is 23 years old and works repairing electrical appliances, refridgerators and electric motors. He is married and has two children. Jose began working from an early age as he found academic work difficult and only passed the 2nd grade of primary education. He works hard because he doesn't want the same thing to happen to his children, so he makes an effort so that they will graduate.

I made a loan today to Julia Narda Aguilar Gomez in Leon, Nicaragua.

Julia Narda Aguilar Gómez is 59. She humbly sells cosmetics. She has been doing this for over ten years because she has always liked to work. She started through her own efforts with certain products; she was given very few products. She lives in a very humble manner with her two children. She works very hard because that is the only way she could give her children the necessities. She is asking for this loan for working capital to buy creams, perfumes, and colognes. What she likes best about her work is being able to meet other people and get more work experience. Her biggest dream is to get her own beauty salon.

Education Generation

I helped out two students today ($20 each) at Education Generation. In some sense its like a loan to the world.

One of the students is Luckisika. Luckshika is studying computer science at Eastern University in Sri Lanka. She is one of four girls. Her father is retired. Luckshika is very determined and very hard working. She sat the university entrance exams three years in a row until she was finally accepted. She would like to earn enough to put her sisters through university too.

Luckshika started University in Sept 2008 and this scholarship (of $260) will cover her second year of of University!

The other student is Ramachandran. Ramachandran is studying Science at Eastern University. He is the oldest of 5 children. In 1990 their house was destroyed during the civil war. The family was housed in a refugee camp where they lived for several years. They are now living in a relative’s house. The father works as a laborer. Ramachandran is anxious to be able to help his family escape from poverty.

Memorial shirts for the firemen who died in the station fire.

I just bought a few shirts for a memorial fund for the two firemen who died in the station fire. $20. What a deal. Profits are split between the two families.

I also made a donation to Rob Miller, the person running against the congressman who yelled at President Obama today. He's a vet and progressive enough for me, and I think having him in the house instead of the yeller is a good thing.

The hardest part was figuring out what to put on the gift card. I cried.

Baby registry of the fireman's widow

One of the firemen who died fighting the Los Angeles fires has a wife who is about to give birth. They set up a gift registry, and I bought them some diapers. I hope they get all the items on the list, its the least thanks we can give.

Been quite distracted today because of the fires. They are moving in my direction and there is a chance I might have to evacuate. All depends on the winds.

Helping the Humane Society help animals from the fire

I just made a donation to the Pasadena Humane Society and Wildlife relief.
The fires are bad, 35,000 acres have already burned, places like JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) are threatened. They have started evacuations in my city, but on the other side, my place isn't threatened yet. My yard is covered in ash and its very smokey though. Please consider donating to the shelter and helping the animals.

As the fire in La Cañada rages out of control, hundreds of animals and people are being forced from their homes. We don’t know how long this will last. There is little hope that the fire can be contained in the next 24 hours and it is moving quickly. No matter what it takes, or how long it lasts, we are committed to doing everything we can to help.

The Vice President of Operations, Veronica Fincher, has been on duty non-stop since the fire broke out. Temporary kennels have been set up at the shelter and the evacuation site at La Cañada High School for pets whose families have been evacuated from their homes. Pasadena Humane Society officers, staff and volunteers are onsite in La Cañada and we have arranged fulltime staffing there. As the only licensed wildlife center in a 30-mile radius, the Humane Society has readied itself for the rapid intake of displaced and injured wild animals, in addition to domestic animals and livestock. Dogs, cats, horses, an alpaca, a bobcat and a turkey vulture have all ready been taken in.

Responding to a disaster of this scale is an expensive and exhausting endeavor. It requires a huge amount of manpower, hours upon hours of overtime, not to mention additional supplies. Please, help the Humane Society to help the animals and people affected by this emergency.

I made two Kiva loans today, one to Juliana in Oda, Ghana.

Juliana is 37 years old. She is married and has given birth to four children, two sons and two daughters who are all still in school. She works very hard to support her husband to provide for the family. Juliana lives with her husband and children in a rented apartment in Oda in the Eastern region of Ghana. She is a trader. She is in the palm-oil production business. Juliana supplies to retailers in her community. She procures the palm fruits from nearby communities. She has been in business for 10 years and wants a loan to buy palm fruits in bulk to expand her business.

And to Juan Julián Gutiérrez Lacán in Totonicapan, Guatemala.
Juan Gutiérrez is 43 years old and married. He is a tailor. He has a shop, “Confección de Pants”, with three machines. He lives with his wife. They both devote themselves to the same work. They have two employees to help with this work. He has been making typical skirts in his house, which is in the Paraje Xepatriz of the Cantón Nimapá in the Totonicapán department in Guatemala, for 14 years.

At the moment the Global Open Challenge 2009 is taking place on Global Giving. Each project that is able to raise a minimum of $4,000 and at least 50 separate donors until September 18 will be invited to stay on at GlobalGiving.

It nearly broke my heart to read the story behind one of the project that takes part in the challenge: Safe Water to 120 Albino Families in Tanzania (http://www.globalgiving.com/projects/safe-water-to-120-albino-families-in-tanzania/)

For an Albino in Tanzania, fetching water from a natural source and getting home safely, one need to be extra lucky, even when is armed with a machete. There have been since last year albino killings in Tanzania as the albino organs, particularly genitals, limbs, breasts, fingers and the tongue are in high demand by people involved in mining and fishing activities in the Lake Victoria Zone, especially Mwanza, Shinyanga, Kagera and Mara regions. "They cut my daughter quickly,” she said, making hacking motions with her hands. She had dropped out of school because of short-sightedness a common problem for albinos. - Mother of a killed Albino daugheter

Through this project, some sixty water storage tanks will be constructed at the homes of vulnerable Albino Families to enable them to harvest and store rain water for their needs. It will also provide skin protection, vision aid and home solar lighting.
