old kiva loans

I got my first notice yesterday that one of the Kiva loans I was on was about to expire unless others help fund it. It was funded by the time I got my email, but it shows how Kiva is getting more loans than lenders.

I chose this loan 'cause it was one of the oldest and had the fewest bids. Its to the NARIRURWE WEST C Group in Iganga, Uganda for various businesses.

cheese

Today I made a kiva loan, I found it by searching on cheese. I just got the impulse to
, there wasn't any particular reason. I do like cheese.

The loan was to Maria Guadalupe Liceaga Rodriguez and she's in Solidaridad, Monterrey, Mexico and wants the loan to buy more product for her store, including... cheese.

Kiva of course

Made a loan to Promejoramiento Group in San jose Chacaya, Guatemala, found it by searching 'julia'. I love the write up.

They unanimously made a point of mentioning how thankful they are of the possibility of receiving these “very helpful” loans that allow their microenterprises to “go very well,” as Maria Ramirez Ajcabul expressed. She went on to say that they feel a sense of empowerment when receiving the funds, a kind of responsibility to do something bigger than ever before with it, and prove to their group and, most importantly, their family, that they can pay back the money. They unanimously agreed as well that it was relatively easy to pay back the money. In addition, they all enjoy meeting with their communal bank, which not only allows them to support each other mutually in repaying loans, but provides a few fun social hours every month.

“Without this money, it is impossible to overcome,” stated Natalia Tay. She mentioned the barriers of the cycles of steady profits and expenses, but the drowning and constant increases in costs of living that keep their businesses at such a minimal size. Reliable microloans allow them to overcome these barriers.

Kiva and Kiva Business 4 Business

I just got a great comment about Kiva Business 4 Business, and will be looking more into it this weekend. Looks like I can make loans by using my credit card, Advanta will match up to $200 a month. Sounds like a fantastic deal to me.

I made a loan to Amador Ramirez Solis in Acuna, Mexico for construction of his house.

And I'm busy working on book chapters and reviewing grant proposals and analysis.

kiva and anysoldier.com

I made up a few packages for our troops and am sending them via anysoldier.com. I can't wait till Obama becomes president and the troops come home. Hopefully we won't be invading Iran in the meantime....

I had more Kiva credit so I made more loans. I chose based on weaving, Julia and two that were in Latin America, one in Mexico the other in Nicaragua.

I made a loan to a weaver in Segundina, Peru, whose location and name are being protected. Julia Lionila Carlos Alonso sells fabric in Peru. Teofilo Alvarado Rubio wants a vitro floor in Acuna, Mexico

Kiva and Magazines for the Veterans

I made a loan today to Patience Oriemgbe in Benin City, Nigeria for her liquor store. I liked the bottles.

I am bringing old magazines to the Veterans Association (hospital) today. They really appreciate all the reading materials they get. If you have old magazines just drop by a local VA, and drop them off at the volunteer headquarters. You'll even get a tax receipt if you want.

kiva credit

I had some Kiva credit to use up, so made 4 loans today. One was to Nolvia Cecilia Cruz Zeledon in Managua, Nicaragua to help fix up her house. Its an older loan and only has a few more days to fund, but I am optimistic.
I made a loan to Julia Zavaleta De Castillo in Mache - La Libertad, Peru, and to Julia Azucena Baquedano Amador in Chinandega, Nicaragua.

I chose my first loan to At Khin because of her weaving. The world needs more weavers.

Kiva and Obama

I spent a few hours yesterday at a local Voter Registration Event run by Obama supporters. It was a lot of fun, we had a much higher turn out than expected. I got to see some old friends (including my friend Patrick O'Connor who just filmed a Monk episode - look for him soon as one of the 'bad' guys).

I made two Kiva loans today, both chosen because they were 'old'. I hope they get funded. I haven't had a loan not fund yet, I'm not sure if Kiva has.

One Kiva loan was to Pablo Rodriguez Regalado for his house construction in Mexico, the other was to Silvano Chaparro for his general store in San Lorenzo, Paraguay.
