Random Acts of Kindness

One of the first big random acts of kindness I did was years ago - I was watching TV (shows how long ago that was, I haven't had TV in years) and heard the story of a young women who put herself through highschool while she was homeless and then made it to Harvard. The story touched me, and I sent her a check via the TV station for $100. I could barely afford it at the time, but I figured she needed it more. For days I wondered if I had done the right thing, then I found out she cashed the check on Christmas Eve. That brought me assurance at the time.

I just heard her on NPR, and one of the things she said was that all the gifts she got at the time taught her that people could be good. And now she is running her own non-profit Manifest Living.

As she says, you don't have to do it all. You just have to feel like you have done your part. I guess that's what keeps me going.

I'm going to buy her book.

Pay it forward

I met someone on a plane the other day. She was off to Europe to go to school for a few months. She was on a strict budget, and asked if the airport in Canada would take US money or if she had to exchange some to buy food. I had some Canadian money with me, so I gave her a $20. She wanted to pay me back, but I told her to pay it forward. When she can afford it, she can help someone else out.

She's planning on being a teacher. So my act of kindness may have an exponential effect.

I ran into an old friend on Saturday who told me she passed on a gift I had given her about 10 years ago. When she was a student she had a Christmas where I helped her out with some money because she was as poor as I've been as a student. And to be honest, I hadn't remembered the gift. But she had, and passed it on and told the person what I told her 'not to pay her back but to pass it forward'.

It only takes a spark to get a fire going.

I made a kiva loan to Mongolia today.
Mr. Dorlig is 46 years old and lives with his wife and five sons in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. They all live together in a small house that they built recently. His eldest son is married but still lives in father’s house. His three younger sons, Chimiddorj, Turbold and Cagaancooj, are in high school and secondary school. Dorlig runs a taxi business in the city in his own car, which he bought on leasing contract from his taxi company. He enjoys transporting people. He also works in a secondary school as a carpenter and plumber on a part-time basis. Dorlig is a very hardworking person and is known for his good character. He has gained a lot of experience over the years and is a trusted driver for his many customers. Last April, Dorlig took a loan from Kiva, used it appropriately and paid back in full, on time. Now he is requesting a loan for the second time to complete his house improvement. I tried out a new site -kivabank.org. It tells you lots about your kiva loans, and suggests other similar or different loans. I used it to find loans in other countries - added 2 new countries to my list today - Liberia and Kyrgyzstan. The group in Karabalta, Kyrgyzstan want to increase products for their business.

The guys in Liberia wants to buy more movies for his business.

Second Life - American Cancer Society Relay

I sponsored a friend in Second Life who is raising money for the American Cancer Society. There is a HUGE fundraiser in Second Life each year.

Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA

I made a donation to day to my local Humane Society & SPCA. They put out an appeal for summer donations; apparently a lot of animals end up at the shelter when people go on vacation or leave them outside.
The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA also does a fantastic job of helping animals during fires, they accept evacuees.

Kiva loan to Julia

Made a loan to Julia in Nicaragua today.
Julia Mercedes Funes sells general merchandise from her stall in the Estación market in the mornings, and in the evening she moves between selling in the La Terminal market and the El Central market.

She will use this loan to buy various products such as: underwear, slippers, soap, bleach, blouses, etc.
